USB printer setup
A reliable wired install when wireless discovery fails.
- Use a data USB cable (USB-A or USB-C to USB-B). Charge-only cables will not work.
- Install the driver package first if the manufacturer says “software before cable.” Otherwise Windows/macOS can detect on plug-in.
- Plug into a rear USB port on a desktop (avoid unpowered hubs for first setup).
- Power the printer on. Wait for the OS to install or prompt for the driver.
- Set the USB printer as default if you also have a wireless copy of the same model.
- Print a test page. You can add Wi‑Fi later from the printer menu without removing USB.
Technician notes
- A 6 ft cable from our shop is enough for most desks and avoids cheap no-data leads.
- If the PC never beeps or shows a device, try another port and another cable.
