Cartridge or toner not recognized

Fix “install cartridge,” chip errors and incompatible ink messages.

  1. Power off, open the access door, and confirm the cartridge is the exact model (e.g. 67 vs 67XL) and fully clicked in.
  2. Remove the orange pull-tab and any tape over contacts. Do not touch gold contacts with dirty fingers.
  3. Clean contacts lightly with a lint-free cloth. Reinsert until you hear or feel the latch.
  4. Close the door and wait 30–60 seconds. Some models need a restart after a new chip.
  5. If you use a remanufactured cartridge, the printer may still demand an original — that is a firmware policy, not always a defect.
  6. Update firmware only from the manufacturer. Then retry. If the error stays, note the exact on-screen code for support.

Technician notes

  • Mixing XL and standard in some HP/Epson models is fine; mixing the wrong number series is not.
  • Shop requests include a model check so we do not quote the wrong SKU.
