Clear a paper jam safely

Remove stuck sheets without tearing rollers or the printhead.

  1. Stop printing. If the manual says so, power off. Never pull paper while the carriage is moving.
  2. Open the rear door, duplexer, and input tray — jams hide in more than one place.
  3. Pull paper in the direction of the path, slowly, with both hands. Sideways yanks wrinkle and tear.
  4. Look under the cartridge area for scraps. Use a flashlight. Torn bits cause the next jam immediately.
  5. Close every cover until it latches. Reload a fresh, fanned stack. Avoid curled or damp paper.
  6. Power on and print a test page. Recurring jams often mean wrong weight, overfilled tray, or worn pickup rollers.

Technician notes

  • The care kit in the shop is for rollers and trays — not for forcing jammed gears.
  • Photo paper jams if loaded in a document tray that expects 20 lb bond.
